Home Made Woodworking Apron

0 komentar

Yesterday, walking through the center of the city,  casually I saw a leather dealer, so I thought of buying a small amount for a woodworking apron.
I purchased a little bit of artificial leather; it seems to me right for the purpose and cheap: with one meter is possible to obtain two aprons (the material stock was 1,50 mt wide). If you have someone at home with a sewing machine, you are safe, and will realize easily the project.

Start from a 1 mt x 70 cm piece and fold itself on the short side. Cut following the plan and obtain the main part. From waste you can cut the pockets, collar and back strips too.  Fix them with pins and wear the apron before sewing it; if the case  adjust to your body by shortening the collar (I am 6' 2" tall). In order to make room for some little tool, the central pocket has been half divided by a sewing, while the pectoral pocket has three divisions to allowing the insertion of pencils and some other small things. Sew collar and strips (to waist level) to main part and make a sewing along the whole perimeter for more strength.
If you wish you can modify the project following your preferences, by extending the apron to knees or making it higher-necked for more protection.

tell the story

i'm gonna leave this here for a minute and come back to it later.
it's an important thought and i don't want to lose it, (again).

ok, i'm back ... below is my attempt at on observation on the letter above:

so kurt vonnegut is one of my favorites.  like my father, he was caught up in world war II and made the best of it.  in kurt's case, you might say he made a career of it, and i go back to his books from time to time for his insightful writing and sense of humor.  i recently read the book of his collected letters, and while some are mundane, others are brilliant and totally make me stop and think .. the one above is a good one. click it to enlarge it and (hopefully) be able to read it ...
others are below at the end of this post.

what to make of the letter above.  hmmm  ..  i am a member of the the guild of vermont furniture makers, a group with 30 or so members throughout the state.  .. kate pace owns and runs a company called 'route 7 social' that is engaged in helping small businesses like ours market their products.  the guild recently received some state money in a grant designed to increase business activity and job creation, and we engaged her services to use social media to help us do that.   after imploring, (without much success), the list of suspects to add content to our guild of vermont furniture makers blog  , she has more or less taken over the production, (writing), and promotion of that web address.  in that effort she is visiting and profiling all thirty artists in their studios.   i had an interesting conversation with her on thursday, when it was our turn, dan's furniture, sam's metal work, and will's banjos.   one of her observations from visits with other makers are that many of them describe themselves as 'not into self promotion', and 'want to let their work speak for itself'.  that's all well and good, and i understand completely.  but often, objects themselves don't have all that much to say and just sit there quietly, waiting to be 'discovered' ...  as kurt points out, "people capable of loving some paintings or etchings or whatever can rarely do this without knowing something about the artist."  so without the story, as kurt suggests above, 'there goes the ballgame right there'.  i agree that the object is only one half of the conversation.   i'm often curious why i write what i write and why i actually enjoy and look forward to doing it, and have come to the not unsurprising conclusion that, while it is not for everyone, i have a story to tell about the stuff we make, and sharing that story gives me some sense that what i am doing has an audience and is part of a dialog.  so, my humble advice to other artists is to 'tell your story'.  there's nothing more deflating in my experience than to drop off a piece, have the client say here's your check, thank you, see you later..  there's more to the ballgame than that.

think briefly about the 'famous funriture makers' .. krenov, wendel castle, nakashima, garry knox bennet ... while their work 'spoke for itself', they all spoke up for it too ... picasso, jasper johns, ai weiwei, story tellers all ..

some more of kurt's letters .. click the photos to enlarge them ..
'we may end up miles from here' .. love it

one of the more poignant ones above, on the draft ...
and, on quitting smoking ...
and, last nut not leasgt

one of kate's photos from her visit thursday .. good one!

another oval walnut pedestal table

0 komentar
while we're on the subject and we only have a couple more outs to go in the world series, here are some photos of the other walnut pedestal table that trevor's working on.  final sanding and staining start tomorrow ...
update 11/10
good to go .. it's headed to the islands via miami .. wouldn't mind delivering it myself ...
loyal readers might recognize the larger version below from a blog post back in 2010.
that one was quite a bit larger at 60 x 86, but the concept and the execution is pretty much the same.
make the base and top and top of the base ..
determine the height of the pedestal parts and make the patterns.  use the scale model to determine if the patterns are correct.  note that to make the miters meet, we had to add a small straight section to the curve as the top is a different proportionat 40 x 60 .. 2/3, rather than 3/4
trevor made the scale model base parts from 13/16ths poplar and painted them and once they were fitted up, enlarged the design on the cnc and made the full size patterns ...

we're going with the dark finish ..
TWO OUTS IN THE 9TH!  looking good for the sox ... table's looking good too, ready for final sanding and the first coats of stain tomorrow.
seats six good friends .. paper is 11 x 17 .. saw blades are 10"

2 and 2 with two outs.  i think the red sox are gonna win it ... and they just did ... i think i'll go jump up and down a  bit ..

a bar

0 komentar
well ok, here's a blast from the past ... we, or should i say, me and the guys who were working here with me in 2004 made this bar for a client at stratton mountain ski area, about a half hour to the southeast by car from my shop.  i had a request today from a potential client to look at an antique front bar he has purchased and to design and build a back bar and incorporate a sink and frig in the whole deal somewhere.  i haven't been to see it yet, but i hope to get over to his house nearby to have a look next week.
click the photos to enlarge them ...
i like bars.  when i came to town here in 1971, i had been traveling the country for a couple years after penn state, 'looking for a place to live' i was telling myself at the time.  actually, what i think i was looking for then was #1., a wife or significant other, and #2. something to do that didn't involve working late nights and sleeping half the day away.  the money was good though then and i got to live in some fancy spots along the way, fort lauderdale, the ocean reef club in key largo, washington dc, montauk, palm springs, and just before vermont, i made a brief trip to europe.  life was good.  and it got better when i met the wife, at the bar i was working in.  she went on to become the first female bartender there, and we are still friends with the gentlemen and his wife who hired me 44 years ago.  they were here for dinner last night.
i've made some bar like pieces of furniture, and i once helped build a 35' long, quicky commercial bar when i was a carpenter, but i'm hoping we get to build another small, intimate, classy home bar along these lines.
i was just learning my cad program in 2004 so the drawings are a bit cluttered, but obviously, they worked.  this was a challenging, fun project and it took me a good solid half hour to find the folder that the pictures were in.  that folder was entitled 'on site photos' and it contained some real gems .. more on that, and hopefully, this project shortly ...
i can almost see that 2004 bar from here.  that's stratton mountain from the back yard, about 20 miles
away as the crown flies.  you can just see the top of mount snow behind it, another
15 or 20 miles to the due southeast of stratton.

all for now.

fun with edvard

i'll be looking for one like this again now every time i cut a pepper.
a little more history on the original paintings below, from wikipedia

"The original German title given to the work by Munch is Der Schrei der Natur ("The Scream of Nature"). The Norwegian word skrik usually is translated as scream, but is cognate with the English shriek. Occasionally, the painting also has been called The Cry.
In his diary in an entry headed, Nice 22 January 1892, Munch described his inspiration for the image:
One evening I was walking along a path, the city was on one side and the fjord below. I felt tired and ill. I stopped and looked out over the fjord—the sun was setting, and the clouds turning blood red. I sensed a scream passing through nature; it seemed to me that I heard the scream. I painted this picture, painted the clouds as actual blood. The color shrieked. This became The Scream.[8]
This memory was later rendered by Munch as a poem, which he hand-painted onto the frame of the 1895 pastel version of the work:
I was walking along the road with two friends – the sun was setting – suddenly the sky turned blood red – I paused, feeling exhausted, and leaned on the fence – there was blood and tongues of fire above the blue-black fjord and the city – my friends walked on, and I stood there trembling with anxiety – and I sensed an infinite scream passing through nature.[9]  "

House Flip Project

My dad purchased this house last winter and he and I
spent the winter and spring trying to rehabilitate it for sale. The
place was in rough shape. The water damage was very severe, so
we ended up removing the dormer, as well as totally replacing
the back 10 feet of the house. We also added a
front bedroom/office area, and completely
replaced the garage. My dad was the mastermind behind the
project, and it turned out great!
Here are some of the before and afters.

the beautiful music all around us .. stephen wade stops by ....

0 komentar
we had a great event in manchester last wednesday evening.  the verrmont council of the humanities 'first wednesdays' program featured stephen wade, a grammy winning banjo player and music historian.  he is a stunning performer and great story teller.  he spent an hour or so describing his travels through the south, meeting and playing with the old time musicians in the 60s and 70s interspersing the story with song on about 7 or 8 historic banjos from his collection.  naturally, at the end of the show, will needed to buy his book, 'the beautiful music all around us ... field recordings and the american experience'.  more about that book at this link.  while doing that, he struck up a conversation with stephen and his friend sandy, a banjo collector.  next day, wouldn't you know, they showed up at the shop for a visit and to test out a few of will's banjos.  great music, great banjos, and a great time was had by all ...
sandy, with a new one, hot off the press

and will plays a tune for stephen ..

a cabinet mockup

ok .. the cabinet is done and in new york now,
awaiting the application of the antique papers.
i'm going to update this whole post eventually with more construction detail.
this was a deceivingly complex piece and we're happy to have it on its
way to its new home.

the original part of the post below i wrote back in april
as a 'information' post for the client.  there is more to this piece than
meets the eye and we wanted to work out the proportions and
construction details before working on the real thing.
a full size 'model', if you will.
shows a 3/4 view .. for bigger versions of these pictures, click them to enlarge them ..
overall dimensions of this mockup 58 high x 30.5 wide x 16.5" deep
from the side a little more
 with the elbow catch
interior .. drawer faces and shelves mahogany .. painted back?
the top of the cabinet is below typical eye level.  it is also the only surface on the outside of the cabinet not to have the applied paper and frame detail
showing the side hung runners for the file drawers.  we can use full extension runners on all the drawers if you like .. otherwide, the smaller drawers will run on wood and pull out only about 3/4 of the total depth
