new table design

4/5/15 ... we're in the process of adding a new design to our collection of expanding tables. 

this one was a collaboration between our client, who sent us photos and guided our sketching, and me, who did the drawings, and trevor, who made the models above.

we started out with the base splitting and separating with the leaves and then realized that

the whole concept would be easier to execute and would work better if the vertical base sections were at a 45 degree angle to the split in the table top.

there is a 3.5" square block in the center of the four verticals that was 

split on a 45 before the final glue up.

 

here are the four verticals with their braces glued on.  the joints are reinforced with dominoes.

t'was the night before xmas eve......

My wife left this morning with Mandy and Seth to go to New York to see her parents for the holidays. She'll be coming back tomorrow(today when you read this). I would have gone too but I put in for it too late. Tomorrow at work there will only be 4 others besides me A full crew is 20. Maybe if I put in for it now I might be able to get xmas 2021 off.

In one way it works for me. If it wasn't xmas a couple days hence, I would have stayed in the shop much longer than I did. But that was not to be as I need this opportunity to wrap my wife's gifts. I've been putting it off because I like wrapping presents about as much I would like sticking a fork into my right eye repeatedly.

not much to clean up

There is a bit of glue causing the some blue tape remnants to cling to the dowels. But there are no glue dribs or drabs on the top and pencil marks to get rid off.

flushed to the top

There are a few indentations around the dowels that I have deal with. I am going to try and steam them out as I also have two clamp marks on the front to do.

this will be ready

I got a coat of shellac on and it looks good. If I can squeeze it in, I'll try to put another coat on before I go to bed. If not I can get a couple of coats on it tomorrow. I only have a half a day of work to put in.

my wife's present stash

This has all the small presents I got for my wife in it. It's been in the shop on this chair for a month. Tonight I dealt with it.

I have been thinking of some way to fix the blow outs on the through mortises. Paul Sellers went over how to avoid this today on his woodworking class video. I have two of them that have a couple of not so big chips gone, but big enough that they can be seem 3-4 feet away. At least I can and I wear glasses. There isn't any rush on this and I have time to think about a solution for it.

mystery chest

we've got a really interesting piece in the shop for repairs today .. nothing major, a loose stiffener, replace some funky newly added screws with something more appropriate, add some steel supports to the lid .. it's in remarkable shape for its apparent age and we're wondering about its origin and approximate date .. all the nails and hardware are original and hand forged, and we've all been happy to have the carvings as company on this snowy day .. any thoughts, send me an email or leave a comment .. thanks!  big snow coming ...

Tool Chest Bench

There are two important benefits to accommodate a good number of tools in the carpenter's bench: they are always on hand and, adding a consistent weight to the entire structure, greatly enhance stability. On my bench I obtained the most space possible: in addition to the classic dresser, I used the open compartment under the top to accommodate the wooden planes I use more frequently. In the shorter side where the vice is not present there is another space, built in the thickness of the legs and when I fixed some instruments for measuring and tracking.

Of course, the planes are king, occupying most of the available space. The two large drawers on the left side are occupied by combination planes. One of the drawers on the right side is devoted to tools for drilling, brace, hand drill, gimlet, tips etc..
