i can see clearly now

 i'm a firm believer in getting all the light you can into a house in vermont.  

the upside of that is you get to see out good too.

 this client called me back in october with 'a problem'

 he loved the view from his living room through the front door

when it was open, but he felt 'closed in' and like he was missing something 

when the door was closed, and i agreed.  our first plan was to make a new door

to match the glass layout in the sidelights, and you can see that concept in 

the drawing below.  click the photos to enlarge them ..

 but then, after i made a simple photoshop mockup of what it would look like

if the glass went all the way down, like my front door below,

the clients decided that that was the way to go for them too.

this is our front door at home, and you can see the full height glass

 back door through the left sidelight.  so, ground floor on our house,

there are three full height glass doors and two full height all glass sidelights.

we did a little practice run at the shop, routing the door panels out on the cnc.

  will has now turned my old office closet into his dust free banjo finishing area.  the glass in

the doors made it so i didn't lose the light from the closet window when will was finishing.

we did this panel to glass thing a few years back for another client and trevor has

definitely dialed in the technique on the cnc.  first 'test' pass above.

final pass ... where there were formerly rails and interior stiles, there is no paint.  

where there was just a molding, he left the paint .. that is just amazing to me.

easy to square up though .. the view through our back door below .. after a quick mental count, i realize between the wood shop, the finish room, the new metal shop, the house, and the old metal shop, 

there are 15 doors with full height glass.  i really like light.

a bethlehem steel huntboard

home stretch on the 'bethlehem steel' huntboard.  i'm liking the form ... light, graceful and functional.  44 x 20.5 deep by 34 tall, in natural, figured cherry.  just waiting for a final confirmation on the hardware to wrap it up ... we all enjoyed this project!  click the photos to enlarge them ...

Tangram puzzle pt 2.......

I had plenty time left in the shop tonight to play with the Tangram puzzle. The wood I had planed to thickness and stickered for a couple of days looked good. All four of them were flat and the bowing I thought I saw isn't there now. Time to put the finishing touches on this hand tool only project. I will have to hurry a bit because my youngest daughter is coming home today from North Carolina for xmas.

two puzzles out of this

I just eyeballed this for flatness. I looked down the long edges and faces and nothing jumped out at me so I sawed this in half. I had about an inch of wiggle room in the middle so I didn't have to go nutso with splitting this in two exactly.

square

I first made one long grain edge flat and square. I then squared an end grain edge off of that. This gave me two reference edges at a 90° to scribe lines for the opposite sides. I shot all four edges on the shooting board and touched up two edges with my edge plane. In the end I got a square that is square on all four corners both ways.

laying out

Splitting this distant in half is the hardest part of the layout. You could measure this but the dividers make better sense here. Once you split the distance the dividers are set for laying out all five pieces on this side.

used a combo square this time

You don't need a 45°saddle square to do the layout, a combination square will do the job too. On the half way mark draw a line for the middle size triangle.

Once you layout the first small triangle the square is laid out too. One more layout line to mark.

last small triangle

 The dividers lay out the leg of the last small triangle (all the triangles are equilaterals).  Draw a line from the right hand point of the dividers to the bottom right corner of the square. Doing this marks this triangle and the parallelogram to the right.

first saw cut frees the middle sized triangle

This is my third time sawing out a puzzle and I can't think of a better way to do this.

second saw cut

This is the hardest saw cut to make and it's also the longest one. Since I have more of these I want to do, I am going to make a jig to do this saw cut. It's hard to hold this and saw it at the same time. I think I'll make a 90° vee that is open at the apex so I can push this into and saw.

Sawing this whitish wood and trying to follow the knife line was difficult. This isn't too bad and I plan on sanding a round over on all the pieces so that should remove this evidence.

I sawed the parallelogram off first and then freed the two small triangles. The last saw cut sawed the two large triangles into two.

jumped the kerf on the square

I don't think this will be a problem but I am spray painting them. At a minimum I'll have to sand this smooth.

I didn't knife the line all around but just did the top. The exit cut from the saw left all the edges a little ragged out.

I sanded all the outside edges of both of the large triangles with a sanding sponge.  I'll do the other pieces when I do the round overs.

just shy of 5 1/2" square

I thought that this puzzle might have been too small but I like the size of it. It's compact but each piece seems large enough to see what it is. Next batter is making a box or something for this. That will have to wait as my wife and daughter just got home from the airport.

Face Lift

These photographs are of a converted farm storage

building. The homeowner is an engineer and designed the garage 

bays and 2nd story on the left half of the building. We worked 

with him to add on the 2nd story section in 2011. 

This past summer we rebuilt the roof framing on the 

right and then sided the entire structure.

back to work

we'll ok .. it's the new year, and we're back at work, and from the looks of it here, we're pretty busy.  luckily, the last few days things have kind of come into focus and under control ... a little new year miracle, compared to the last couple weeks of 2013.  click the photos to enlarge them.

trevor seems to have the 12' cherry cabinet details mostly complete, and we'll be doing some preinstallation recon work on site tomorrow or friday.  it's always nice to check the floors for level and the walls for plumb when you are installing a major piece in an older house.  well, first we have to finish the piece, but as soon as everything else here leaves, we'll be on that ...
it should be ready for finish after tomorrow.  next week after the other stuff leaves

the pool table is finished now that will has felted the rails below .. the felt is simonis, dark green and i believe it's the first time we have used that color .. like it.

and for above the table ..

 

we're working on this light, assisted by authentic designs, up the road in rupert .. 

it's nina mooney, the designer's concept, and i think it's going to be cool ...

we had to do some creative cutting, drilling, tapping, and epoxy work,  but i think we've got it.

and in the pool table photo above, you can see the model for the table in the drawing below.  it will be made from recycled chestnut and we should be starting the joinery tomorrow sometime.

and the benches below go with 8,  30 x 36" quartered oak table tops we finished on  monday.

the commercial pedestals are on site, and hopefully we'll install them next week with the 

pool table, the benches, and the dining table below.

we're using a fine (new to us) polyurethane varnish.  it's by a company called lenmar, which has been recently purchased by benjamin moore.  we used a coat of gloss as a base and applied two coats of satin on top with a 3" foam brush.  flowed out like it was sprayed.  i'm going to go out on limb and recommend it ... not something i usually do, but i like it as a finish.

this is another project for the hill farm inn, a rehab of a venerable bed
and breakfast down the road in sunderland.

there was concern that the antlers on the deer from the logo inlay

 would disappear if we left them in the burl.  sooo.

 

there was an antler that sam found in the woods rattling around, 

and trevor made some 'antler antlers'.  fun.

and we moved the mill from the old metal shop

 to the new one thanks to the help of our friend malcolm cooper, president and owner of jk adams

and his new company peace street rigging ... any excuse to use one of his tractors.

 the mill is happy to be back in a heated space ...

 sam's busy in the new metal shop .. knocking out a few projects before 

starting on a new big one next week
